Image of Logitech’s iOS 7 gamepad for iPhone leaks

There are two major issues with touchscreen gaming. In order to play you inevitably end up covering part of the screen, and because all you can do is tap and gesture, the controls are quite limited and don’t fit some types of gameplay at all well.

With the release of iOS 7 Apple has added support for hardware controllers, and therefore we can expect to see a number of peripheral manufacturers offering game controller add-ons for iPhones and maybe even iPads.

One of those manufacturers is Logitech, and the company hinted at a game controller for iPhone last week on Facebook. Now, an image of that gamepad has leaked as tweeted by @evleaks, which you can see above.

The gamepad looks to offer a d-pad, four face buttons, and two shoulder buttons. The iPhone slots into the gamepad housing and there’s a slot on the back to allow the camera to still function. The added length means it isn’t going to be pocket friendly, and the gamepad is a solid unit so you can’t fold it up when not in use.

What’s unclear is how it interfaces with the iPhone. Does it require the Lightning port, or is it a Bluetooth link? From the way the handset slots in I’d guess Bluetooth is what Logitech has chosen to use.

As for compatibility, Logitech will have gone with support for the most recent versions of the handset. So I’d expect the iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, and iPhone 5S to all be compatible. That also means the latest generation of the iPod touch should work.
